Community Archaeology Ireland

Community Archaeology Ireland is a project of the Cultural Learning Initiative

What is Community Archaeology?

Community archaeology or more accurately community-based archaeology ‘is a relatively new development. Its most important distinguishing characteristic is the relinquishing of at least partial control of a project to the local community’ (Marshall 2002, 211).

In essence it is archaeology by the people for the people.

Community Archaeology Ireland specialises in developing community-based projects through working with and advising individuals and community groups who wish to investigate any aspect of Irish heritage.
